The Healthy Heart Trust has a rich history of engagement with medical art and literature. We would like to celebrate the special contributions made by artists, writers, poets and medical academics, who have mingled complex medical concepts with their lived experiences, into forms of artistic expression that have enabled the general public to connect, reflect and learn.

& 2 – HUNG Ka Lam Jay, MAN Pui Hei Marcus, O Yu, WONG Dag, WONG Richard, Horst Kiechle – “This is an anatomically correct heart inscribed with the oaths our group has set for ourselves as we first got admitted into medical school as first year medical students. We have made the heart out of blank paper, which symbolizes our ignorance and plasticity.”
– Fung Wan Yee – “Cardiovascular diseases and depression as a vicious cycle. Patients with the disease could be constantly fearing that they could die in any time, causing the rise of depression and anxiety, while depression in turn may have indirect effects on heart diseases. Comfort from others is important to accompany patients and face the unknowns.”
– Eric Dos Santos de Andrade – “In my piece, ‘Temporal Pulse: The Aortic Reminder’, I delved deep into the intricate relationship between the passage of time and the vulnerability of human life. The heart-shaped hourglass stands as a central metaphor, representing both the rhythmic beat of our existence and the inevitable march of time that governs it. Every grain of sand that slips from the top chamber to the bottom is a testament to the moments we live, love, and sometimes, lose. The deliberate bulge of sand in the upper compartment is a poignant commentary on the silent, lurking danger of aortic aneurysms. This bulging distortion serves as a visual alarm, urging viewers to recognize the often-unseen threats that might be quietly unfolding within them.”
– Yan Ying Esther Chiu – This artwork uniquely explores the anatomical heart in a balloon like form.
– Kwok Tsz Yee Shanti – “A building-fied heart undergoing angioplasty as the cardiac muscles are lacking oxygen for respiration.”
– Helen Wong – “This pair of ‘finger hearts’ is a token of appreciation for all the cardiovascular surgeons and cardiologists out there who have helped numerous patients with the power of their hands. The Chinese words ‘妙手仁心‘ translated into ‘Healing Hands’ was a popular medical TV show from Hong Kong, which had inspired many people to become doctors, and the phrase reminds us to continue to hone our craft as doctors with a kind, compassionate heart.”
– Lam Wing Hei – “The role of maintaining a healthy lifestyle in heart health has become increasingly important. Other than physical health, it is also crucial to focus on our mental well-being and self care. With the balance of physical and mental well-being, as illustrated in my artwork, our heart will ‘bloom’ splendidly with uniqueness.”
– Erin Fitzsimons-West – “My art piece is created using the medium of handicraft (knitting). I believe the heart is unique in its connectivity, but this also results in a fragility, with a subset of conditions relating to the heart focusing on problems with connectivity (arrhythmia). I used knitting as my medium to highlight the inter-connectivity within the heart. This is highlighted in the artwork through missing of a stitch resulting in an unravelling of part of the heart, and creating a visible and prominent difference. It was a pleasure to combine my interests in medicine with my enthusiasm for handicrafts; within cardiology often there is the necessity to be creative, whether that be in surgery through innovative techniques, or within the wards navigating situations of comorbidities”
